The genesis of "Code Purple" is a tale of profound transformation. The term “Code Purple” is an alert code used by the staff at Western State Hospital when a patient is acting out and is considered a danger to themselves and others. Andrew Neil spent three years behind the Steel doors of Wester State Psychiatric Hospital as a patient between 2014-2017.
It all began when my middle son, Andrew Neil, embarked on a journey as a recruited athlete after high school. Following his graduation, he was selected to enter the US Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS), where he earned his appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. He entered West Point as a Plebe in the Summer of 2009, a member of the class of 2012. He began to face formidable challenges in concentrating during his Plebe year and was diagnosed with adult HDST and, regrettably, decided to resign in December 2009. Returning home, his spirits crushed, and his dreams of a military career seemingly shattered, he was in a state of confusion as to what his future would hold. A month after returning home, Andrew made the courageous decision to join the US Marine Corps.
However, fate had other plans. Just a month before he was due to report for USMC training at Paris Island, a car accident left him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Shortly thereafter, he experienced his first in a series of alarming psychotic episodes. What ensued was a remarkable transformation. He withdrew into the confines of our basement, where he declared himself a songwriter and began crafting songs seemingly out of thin air. Between Apr 2009 and July 2013, Andrew Neil struggled with serious bipolar disorder and complex PTSD. He had numerous psychotic episodes and was in and out of numerous hospitals for short term stays. We could not get consistent help for his condition. In 2013, another dramatic life changing event occurred which would again change his life, and our family’s journey forever.
In 2013, during my final deployment to Afghanistan, a distressing incident unfolded. My son had a severe psychotic episode and tragically injured my youngest son, Kyle Scott (aka KYSCOMA), by stabbing him through the arm. Both were swiftly hospitalized, and my troubled son, Andrew, once he was stabilized, found himself behind bars, facing charges of felony malicious wounding. The State of Virginia denied him bail, and he endured more than seven months in solitary confinement until it was determined that he was not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI).
Subsequently, Andrew was committed to the Virginia State Hospital system, where he received the much-needed help we had been seeking for years. During his time as a patient, my wife Connie and I faithfully visited him every weekend. It was during these visits that we repeatedly heard the announcement over the hospital's loudspeaker: "Code Purple, Code Purple in the _____ Ward, room number ____ , security required." A “Code Purple” was announced when a patient was acting out, causing a disruption, or considered dangerous to himself or others.
In May 2017, Andrew was conditionally released and expressed a strong desire to share the music he had composed while in the hospital. We carefully selected 11 of the scores of songs he had written and recorded as a patient and embarked on the creation of an album we aptly named "Code Purple." This unique album is distinguished as the only one in existence entirely composed and recorded within the confines of a State Psychiatric Hospital. Notably, it propelled Andrew to the top of Rankers Best Outsider Music Artist List: https://www.ranker.com/list/outsider-music-bands-and-musicians/reference , where he occupies the number one position alongside renowned names such as Daniel Johnston, Syd Barrett, Frank Zappa, and Brian Wilson and a host of other music legends.
Recently, Andrew formed a band named "Andrew Neil & Code Purple," and they released their debut album, "Resurrection." Before establishing the band and this forthcoming album, Andrew had already released six solo albums. You can find Andrew’s music on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, etc. Many of his earlier, lo-fi recordings are available on ReverbNation, and SoundCloud. His music showcases his remarkable journey and a body of work that encompasses nearly 500 songs, all conceived since the inception of his artistic endeavors in late 2009.

Meet the founder of Code Purple Deals, Ray Maternick. He is the father of 4 children, of which 2 sons struggle with mental health, and they serve as his inspiration for his mission to raise awareness and empower others to share their stories and open the door for healing. He is dedicated to his family and was motivated to create this platform in support of his sons and each of their artistic endeavors – music and visual art.
Ray is a US Air Force combat military veteran who also worked as a DIA analyst for 42 combined years of service. He raised his kids with his wife over the course of 6 different deployments, the final one being in Afghanistan. He eventually decided to settle in the Charlottesville, Virginia area, and retired in 2017.
After enduring a very long and difficult time seeking help for his middle son who was diagnosed with a TBI, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and experienced many psychotic episodes ending with treatment at Western State Psychiatric Hospital, he was inspired to create Code Purple Deals which was founded in December 2023. He hopes that this platform can be a catalyst to promote awareness of the mental health community, spark conversations, and bring hope to others who are on their own journeys to experience healing.
Meet Kyle Scott Maternick (aka “KYSCOMA”), an outsider artist who considers himself more of a recluse. In the past, he felt that opening up and sharing his work was difficult, but now he has decided to welcome you into his world of art!
KYSCOMA initially began his artist career with photography, which opened up his world to the life of what he calls “breathing art.” From there he transitioned to digital art, and more recently has created hundreds of painted masterpieces.
To him, the art world is second nature, and he finds himself meditating on the theory of art daily. To him, art–truly good art–comes from a place deep inside, where one may say the soul is.
His mission with his artwork is to bring people joy when they experience it, and also that people can see what they want from the art – because that’s all art wants…to be seen by the viewer even in stark silence from the artist. In all honesty, he creates for the paintings themselves, not the people who view them. But he does enjoy seeing the viewer light up with that spark of awe or a moment of thought in their eyes.
KYSCOMA’s vibrant and thought-provoking art pieces are transformed into print-all-over designed apparel, turning everyday wear into a canvas of expression and conversation. Each design not only stands out for its aesthetic appeal but also carries deep, meaningful narratives that resonate with individuals from all walks of life.

Meet the band Andrew Neil and Code Purple. Made up of Central Virginia-area musicians, the band was originally formed in 2022 to support an upcoming gig to open for Raelyn Nelson Band’s “Weed and Whiskey Tour” in Hershey Pennsylvania. After several months of practicing and preparing, changes in band members, and various cancellations and date changes for the concert due to illnesses and venue flooding, they were finally able to make their debut on the Rhinestone Stage in Nashville on March 17, 2023.
After that performance, the band decided to officially release the song, “I Like” and see how it would be received. The original recording was sent to producer and mixing engineer, Andy Waldeck, for final mixing. The song was recorded using eight microphones, so there were individual stems that could be mixed. There was some bleed over, but that added to the lofi Garage Rock Sound that the band wanted. The song was officially released to all music streaming platforms on May 15, 2023. That song was successful, so they continued to create and released their first full album, Resurrection, in fall 2023.
